Freia Ombre Merino Fingering Shawl Ball
Fiber: Single ply 100% US Merino Wool (mulesing-free)
Weight: Fingering
Yardage: 430 yards / 100 grams
Gauge: 24-28 sts over 28-36 rows = 4" on US 3 - US 7
Care: Hand wash
Freia's single-ply merino is grown on small farms in the Rockies and milled in North Carolina. The yarn is hand-dyed at the Freia studio is North Adams, Mass. with acid dyes using processes that are gentle to the environment. The yarn is untreated so it must be washed by hand or it will felt.
Though the yarn is a single-ply, their dyeing process strengthens and slightly felts the yarn, making it plump and stronger than you'd expect. This yarn has a loftiness that allows for it to be knit at multiple gauges - as is reflected in the gauge range listed above.
Freia's unique and intense dyeing process creates smooth gradations in deeply saturated colors. These yarns do come with a dye lot but there will be variations even within dye lots due to the nature of hand dyeing. Each ball of Ombre Merino goes through at least four pairs of hands before it reaches you, being checked for consistencies in spinning, dyeing and gauge. The end result is a rustic type of yarn, with incredible saturation and a dreamy soft hand that you can comfortably wear against your skin.
As with all Freia's yarns, it is suggested you knit a swatch (and block it) when making a gauge specific item, as with washing, the gauge will expand significantly.
